default
Posted on Fri, 10 Jun 2016
Question: Hi
I have just been diagnosed with Shingles although the doctor wasn't ultimately sure. Initially i had a very sore spot and it started from that to waking up with lots of little red blisters around it, swollen glands under my chin and swollen chin which is where the condition is. I am wondering whether it could be Impetigo has I am on day 4 and I am still oozing yellow liquid. What do you think?

Brief Answer:
scrapings for culture

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

there are very minor difference between the shingles and impetigo and sometimes very difficult to find them. When in doubt the doctor can scrap and send for culture for definitive diagnosis.
Shingles is quite burning and itchy where as impetigo is itchy and numb.
Shingles has blisters where as impetigo is quite charecterisitic with blister with yellow fluid forming crusts.
So if you are oozing yellow liquid it could be impetigo.
A dermatologist can differentiate better.
It also makes sense to add a bacterial antibiotic / topical Mupirocin for impetigo at this stage.

Hope this can be informative to you.
