default
Posted on Fri, 10 Jul 2015
Question: I wanted to know signs of diabetes. Been travelling and driving for past 4 days and noticed my feet and ankles were swollen badly and did not go down until I got home used compression stocking. still a bit swollen. Should I be worried? Can this be pre diabetes? If so, I read I can reverse without losing 15% of body weight and eating fibrious diet. Is this true?

Brief Answer:
symptom of venous disease

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

This is more in keeping with venous disease. In the legs there are two sets of veins, those just under the skin, called the superficial veins and those that are deeper ,called the deep veins.

Blood goes from the superficical veins to the deep veins then back to the heart.

There are valves in the veins that only allow blood to flow in one direction, it is not suppose to back up.

As persons get older or if there is a history of prolonged standing or a lot of walking or history of a dvt or trauma to the legs- the valves may not work as they should so blood builds up- this causes swelling which goes down when compression stockings are used or the legs are elevated.

Elevation should be combined with the stockings to reduce the swelling.

It is not one of the symptoms of diabetes or prediabetes, it is a symptom of venous disease.

(Prediabetes, diabetes is improved, however with lifestyle changes in diet such as reducing unhealthy carbohydrates , since these are responsible for increasing blood sugars, and also by exercise- 5 to 10 % weight loss)

If venous disease is very bad (significant swelling/ pain or bleeding from any veins) , then surgery may be needed.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
