Brief Answer:
You can lift your arm but it is painful

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using this site. Rotator cuff problem can be diagnosed by following points.
1. You can elevate your shoulder but it causes severe pain, if tear is partial.
2. If tear is complete than you can not elevate your arm. Complete tear are painless.
3. Night time pain is very bad.
4.In your age cuff tear can occur after fall or trauma to shoulder.
Cuff tear can be diagnosed with MRI or ultrasound. I would recommend you to meet a arthroscopy surgeon and confirm the diagnosis.
I hope this answer will be helpful for you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks

Hi, I just have a follow up question, I believe the initial accident took place when I was lifting weights about four weeks ago. My arm was gradually feeling better then on Saturday I slept on the arm I think. Could one night of improper sleep cause the shoulder tendonitis to become a torn rotator cuff?

Brief Answer:
No, it can not occur due to sleeping in wrong posture

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I can assure you that cuff tear can not occur due to sleeping in wrong position. Still there is no harm in getting a ultrasound of the shoulder if your movement remain restricted.
If there is decrease in pain and movements improve than there is no need to consult doctor. You need to take hot water fomentation to shoulder and tablet Brufen if pain is there.
I hope this answers your query. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
Wish you a very good health.
thanks
