Posted on Thu, 24 Nov 2016
Question: I'm 43 years old and I literally pluck out with a tweezer a few silver/grey hairs on top of my head on the side of my head every week or so. I know its superficial what I'm doing. Am I causing internal damage or am I really contributing to more gray hairs by tweezing out the ones I see? thank you

Brief Answer:
Plucking doesnt pose any serious threats neither causes increase in number.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to Health Care Magic, I am Dr Muhammd Ahmad, I have closely read your question and I understand your concerns, I will hereby guide you regarding your health related problem.

There is no sold scientific proof that plucking gray or white hair or any hair for that matter can cause internal damage, sometimes there can be infection in the place from where the hair was plucked and that too is very rare and only happens if there is any background hygiene problems.

Usually there is no major problem in plucking hair and this method is widely used all over the world to remove hair from different parts of the body without any documented serious potential hazards.

Talking about effect on gray hair, I would mention here that there is no evidence that plucking of gray or white hair causes any increase in number of gray hair.

Theoretically, number of gray hair is NOT affected by plucking or leaving them alone. If number of gray hair is increasing that is usually independent of hair removal method and underlying cause like genetic, vitamin and iron deficiency and others should be sought out by visiting a dermatologist when convenient.

I hope this answers your question, if you have more feel free to ask.
Regards.
