What Are The Repercussions Of Accidental Ingestion Of Buspirone?

default
Posted on Tue, 4 Oct 2016
Question: I think that I accidentally tok too many tabs of buspirone yesterday and am feeling very itchy all over my upper body, particularly my arms, chest and back. Could this be due to taking too much buspirone (over the 40 mg. that I usually take)?

Brief Answer:
It is quite possible

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

Excessive itching is common side effect of buspirone at high dose and I think this is likely cause for itching which you are experiencing.

To clarify I have observed severe itching inpatients taking buspirone from dose of 10-45 mg and it is possible that you developed itching because of excessive intake of buspirone.

I hope this helps you.
If you have more questions feel free to write back to me.
Thanks and regards.

Thank you so much for your answer! It actually put my mind at ease to know that this is probably what is causing the itching. With the taking of the Benadryl, and I made a mistake - I'm taking 50 mg., not 20 - is there any way to anticipate about how long this reaction will continue, considering that I'm back on my usual dose of 40 mg/day. I know this may be impossible to really answer, but I guess it's fueled by the deeper question of, "At what point in days, should I contact my own doctor if the symptoms are continuing?"

Brief Answer:
Generally less than 72 hours and at most less than one week

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for reverting back to me.

Most of my patients who discontinue buspirone stop complaining about itching within three days and generally never complain beyond one week.

I hope you will be alright in next two to three days and meantime continue the benadryl. Regarding dose 10-50 mg of benadryl is recommended dose and I do not think you made any mistake.

I hope this assists you further.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for my future patients.
