What Are The Precautions To Be Taken While Exercising On Treadmill?

Posted on Fri, 24 Jun 2016
Question: I have been going to cardio rehab for the last 14 years and I noticed at 74 and being a male my blood pressure has increased and varies each time I go. It ranges from 130/60 to 144/60. I am a bit overweight and work out 3-5 times a week. My goal is to achieve 24 miles a week on a treadmill ad burn st least 600 calories per session. I have recently had a heart catheirzation and no blockages were found I take toprol 50 mg per day and 5 mg of Amlodipine as well as 20 mg of Crestor and 75 mg of Plavix all daily. However I am recently on Amlodipine --just 1 month, my BMI is 33. I can go the treadmill for 75 minutes at a height of 8 and a speed of 3.8 without getting winded. I guess y goal is to lose weight and get my blood pressure down to the 120's. I do have a low heart rate usuall in the low 50's, sometimes down to 45. I hada heart attach 14 years ago and my damage was in the lower part of the heart.

Brief Answer:
Depends on hemodynamic parameters

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

You should monitor your blood pressure and heart rate during the exercise on treadmill.
The workload on treadmill for each patient is defined with the patient's hemodynamic parameters and complaints. If you have no breathlessness, then we should look on hemodynamic parameters: blood pressure and heart rate. Blood pressure shouldn't rise more than 190/110 mm Hg and shouldn't fall below the baseline blood pressure.
Heart rate shouldn't be more than 120 bpm, and also if you see that heart rate doesn't increase more than 70 bpm, in this case it is not desirable to do extensive exercises.

Wishing you good health

I am being monitored at cardic rehab and I wear a heart monitor while working out. In addition my blood pressure is measured during the work out and at the height of my work out my blood pressure is 176/78 and my heart rate varies form 109 to 114 bpm. When my work out is complete my blood pressure is in the 118-120 range over 60 and my heart gets back to 60. I just don't like my opening blood pressure at 130-140. I do use a C-pac machine I often wonder if the setting should be higher. Could an improper setting raise my blood pressure in the morning---I'm at Cardio Rehab at 8:00 AM.-

Brief Answer:
Welcome back

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

Usually there is a tendency to have higher blood pressure in the mornings among the patients. But you shouldn't worry, 130-140 mm Hg blood pressure data are the upper range of the normal blood pressure and it is ok, if you have such data at the beginning.
It seems your hemodynamic parameters are normal and you can safely continue your exercises.

Take care
