Question: Hello, My 62 yr old husband recently underwent TIPs procedure with Portal vein reconstruction n preparation for Liver transplantation, surgery was about 4 weeks ago. He feels well, his mental status remains clear, but in the last few days Ive noticed yellowing of his eyes & skin. Obviously elevating Bili levels. My question is, is this a normal side effect of this procedure?

Brief Answer:
Such complications are frequently encountered

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Portal vein reconstruction–transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (PVR-TIPS) can restore flow through the portal vein (PV) and facilitate LT by avoiding complex vascular conduits. However, the procedure frequently has complications and the failure rate is high, especially in patients with portal thrombosis. The rise in bilirubin level therefore can be considered a 'normal' complication of this procedure.

Let me know if I could help further.

Regards
