Brief Answer:
Ways to prevent getting sick and spreading infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I am sorry to hear about your father in law.

Yes, there are things you can do (depending on the age and cooperation of your kids).

When you come in from being out of the house, wash your hands well. Regular soap and water are good. Actually regular soap is better than antibacterial soap which does nothing for viruses. Wash for at least 1 minute.

When out and about, do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth unless you have just immediately before washed your hands or gelled them with alcohol gel. This is a generally good practice anywhere - even at home - to not touch eyes, nose, or mouth unless you've washed and touched nothing else except clean cloth or paper towel in between.

At home you can wipe with alcohol: light switches, door knobs, computer surfaces, water faucet handles, phones. But don't make yourself crazy trying to clean everything.

To prevent spreading germs to your father in law.

When you enter his house, wipe your hands well with alcohol gel (hand sanitizer).

If you end up getting a cold, wearing masks will greatly help your father in law from catching it.

If you get gastroenteritis (stomach flu), after using the toilet, wash your hands very well, and turn off faucet with a tissue rather than your hands so you don't pick up the germs on your hands. Don't share food, utensils, glasses.

I am sorry for the circumstances you are seeing your father in law. I wish you and your family a good visit with him.

Please let me know if I can provide further information.
