Suggest Ways To Avoid Breakthrough Bleeding While On Birth Control Pills

Question: I want to do Continuous Birth Control......without taking the placebo..I can't take the ultra low because I get breakthrough bleeding..I am also on Topomax 50mg per day, which i know lowers effectiveness, but not sure if it causes breakthrough bleeding. .If I take Ortho-Novum 1/50 , continuously, will that lower my chance of getting breakthrough bleeding from the topomax or would taking it continuously INCREASE my breakthrough bleeding chance because it's continuous.

Hi there,
Welcome to HCM,

Have you considered any other form of birth control apart from pill? Since you want continuous birth control and also not want breakthrough bleeding and your period, have you discussed about Mirena ( progesterone containing IUD) as an option.

The fact that you are taking medications to lower your weight and also taking oral go to receptive pills which do not compliment each other can be a problem.

Taking local uterine hormone in the form of intrauterine device should definitely be considered. The are effective for 5 years and cause amenorrhoea in 90% of women at 1 year. They can be used for 5 years at a stretch and the dose of presenter hormones so small that no drug interaction with others drugs.

It is also protective against endometrial hyperplasia which is common in this age group. Do discuss this with your care provider.

It can definitely be a better option to you than the pill.

i have thought about it, but the thing is, I am going on a trip August 19 -29 and during that time I will be having a sexual relationship, and I can't be bleeding at all..>so right now with only 2 months away, the pill is the only real option because I can't be having any breakthrough bleeding while im with him.

In that case continue the pill you are taking and have tab.primolut 5 mg as back up with you and take it during your days of travel so you would not bleed.

So I can continue on my ultra low dose birth control pills, and then when I go on my trip take both the birth control and the primolut and I won't have bleeding?

Yes, keep a stack of primolut with you and start it a couple of days before your trip and continue it till you are back.

The primolut compensates for the low hormone of the pill and prevents endometrial shedding which presents as spotting.
