Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation is the mainstay of treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Although sometimes steroids like omnacortil are sometimes given to bring rapid improvement, they also depress the immunity and tend to make the infection return faster. So, I would strongly advise against self medication with omnacortil.

You need to give steam inhalation to your child. It helps in reducing the congestion. Just sit with your child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear saline nasal drops in case of nose block.

You may repeat antiallergics like Allegra.

Hello Sir,

Thank you so much for the reply.

The coughing seems to get worse at night, by morning 5 to 5.30 am it subsides and my daughter then goes to sleep peacefully. Her doctor is suggesting nebulization, we have tried it once, not that helpful.

Could you please suggest some remedy for these night time episodes.
How long usually this lasts? What else can we do to strengthen her immunity, because it seems she is getting these infections more frequently since she has started going to playschool around 6 months back.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Nebulization serves the same purpose as steam. Both contain water that is converted into gaseous form and sent to the lungs for hydration. If there is respiratory distress or wheezing, the medicine contained in the nebulization would help, and not if there is no wheezing or distress. So, I guess steam would suffice.

Usually such episodes last for 5-7 days. Steam or nebulization would be the mainstay of treatment for her night-time cough. I understand your apprehension. Give her colorful fruits and vegetables regularly. They contain vitamins, minerals and plenty of antioxidants which should help in boosting the immunity of your child.

Regards
