Suggest Treatment For Vomiting, Eye Infection And Chronic Cough While Having Coxsackievirus Infection

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: First, let me provide background. A year ago, I contracted the Coxsackie virus. It made me so ill, I ended up in the hospital for three days and was ill, vomiting, eye infection, and chronic cough, for the better part of a month. I lost 18-20 pounds over the course of the month. My understanding is Coxsackie is normally contracted by children and the symptoms last a week and are not as severe as what I experienced. I don't know if the above relates to my current symptoms, but it seemed wise to offer this information. My current symptoms are a lessening of grip in both hands. A minor numbness in my left wrist. I have had a minor bladder control issue since having children, but the issue has gotten worse of late. It is the last symptom which really has me concerned. I have always had a pretty good memory and could juggle multiple issues/details at once. Of late, I have noticed a lessening of my ability to juggle as much as I used to. This could be stress because our family has dealt with some tough issues over the past few years, and or just the reality of hitting mid-life, or a combination of both. I am 52. I don't know if these issues are related or not, but they do need to be addressed.

Brief Answer:
Neurological conditions should be considered/excluded first.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

Viral infections including those caused by coxsackieviruses are known to cause neurological disorders after the primary infection, known as secondary encephalitis ( in this type of encephalitis a faulty of immune system is the cause ).

So, in regards to your symptoms, I think this possibility should be considered, and investigated further.

Neurological examination and a brain MRI are needed for this purpose.

If this condition will be excluded after these examinations, we can say your concerns are caused and related to stress.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

Thank you. Yes, your answer is helpful. It confirms my concern and how I need to approach the situation moving forward. As I pursue getting a diagnosis, are there any exercises you would recommend to strengthen the grip? I do exercise and eat fairly healthy, so I am not to sure what else I can do at this point. Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Exercises to strengthen hand grip.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back and thanks for being on follow up.

Exercises to strengthen hand grip include ball squeeze exercise and gripper use, besides general exercises.

These exercises may be used up to five times a day, for about five minutes each time.

Gripper may be used in two ways:1. holding the gripper and 2. speed repetitions.

Hope this helps. Take care.
