Suggest Treatment For Vomiting, Diarrhea, Migraine And Food Poisoning

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Jan 2017
Question: I have been vomiting for 12 hours. It is now a dark grey. I ache all over and have had diarrhea, too.
I have had a migraine for 2 days but I usually don't vomit with the headaches. I took 1 dose of Imodium and that stopped the diarrhea. I thought I might have gotten food poisoning from eating a tuna sandwich at a local restaurant.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

Very likely the vomiting and diarrhea are due to a food poisoning or a viral gastroenteritis and they are both selflimiting but meanwhile you have to make sure you get rehydrated.

Dehydration can be very serious as we loose not only water with the vomiting and diarrhea but electrolites also that are very important for the heart and the rest of the body.

I would say:
1. make sure you drink plenty. You might have the feeling of nausea but make sure you take sips of water and not drink plenty at a time. Take sips of fluids every few minutes; this way the stomach does not get irritated and even if you throw up you will throw up a small amount
2. ORS- oral rehydration solutions are the best way to keep yourself rehydrated as they substitute not only the water but the electrolytes also. It does not taste nice so make sure you do the right mixture with water and drink little every few minutes.
3. other fluids might be helpful to use time after time like white soups- with not much fat and no spices, have little by little every now and then.
4. BRAT diet: banana, rice, apple toast might help a lot. But make sure you take very small portions every 15-20 minutes.
5. rest and try not to contaminate others. Wash hands with warm water and soap regularly.
6. if you have abdominal pain or blood with stools or do not improve than you will need to see a doctro. Other causes of vomiting should be excluded like gallbladder problems and other intestinal problems. Also seing a doctor will be a help if you are still not able to keep fluids and food even though you get small portions- than inravenous fluids might be needed to be used.

I hope this answers to your question and is helpful to you.
I wish you qiuck improvement.

Kind regards
