Question: Hi,
My daughter is 3 years 10 months old , weight 17 kgs. She has been prescribed with ofloxacin & Metronidazole suspension and enterogermina, but this is the first time she has been prescribed antibiotics. On your website only I read that this medicine is not safe for children and also it is prescribed only when other antibiotics don't work. I gave her two doses but see that she is getting restless and behaving odd sometimes, can I discontinue the medicine and just give enterogermina? She had vomitings, loose motions, but today there was no vomiting and she had 1 loose motion. She is getting stomach pain. So gave her cyclopam as prescribed by doctor. She is getting acute pain between her toes and not able to move her toe fingers and thats why we are getting ppanicked.

Brief Answer:
Looks like viral diarrhea - Stop antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hi....by you quote I feel that your daughter might be having a viral diarrhea.....Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic associated diarrhea.

Stop ofloxacin and metronidazole. But toe pain might not be related to it.

I suggest you use zinc supplements & ORS...

Hope my answer was helpful for you. Happy to help anytime. Further clarifications and consultations on Health Care Magic are welcome.

Hello Sir,

Thank you for the reply.
Can we give only enterogermina? Or should we stop that as well?
Also this all started when she had an icecream (i thought it was food poisoning) which was somewhat blackish.
Also please let us know if we can stop now (as we already gave her two doses of antibiotics), will that create more problems for her?
Give us more information about the zinc supplements.
Please provide us the information about the viral diarhea.
She had vomitings 7-8 times on the day she ate icecream. Now we are giving her the vomiting medicine too as prescibed by the doctor half an hour before food i.e. Emeset syrup.SHoudl we stop that as well, please advise.

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hi....
1. You can give enterogermina for total 5 days.

2. When the antibiotics are not needed and yet started, no point in continuing further, you should stop them. The only indication of antibiotic in diarrhea us blood in stools.

3. Zinc supplements can be given at 20mg per day. It's available as Z&D drops (dry syrup) 1ml once daily for 14 days.

4. You can give Emeset till vomiting is there, if there's no vomiting you need not give it.

5. Regarding viral diarrhea - once it starts it might last for 5-7 days. It will initially start with vomiting and later on proceed to have loose stools and then gradually subside. Unless the kid is having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.
