Posted on Fri, 2 Dec 2016
Question: My son got sick a few days ago and of course I now have whatever he had. The symptoms started yesterday(stuffy nose, sore throat, etc...) but as the night when on the sore throat got worse. I just woke up and it feels as if someone put a string around my throat and tightened it just enough so that for me to squeeze out a sound. I can barely or drink and I very nauseous, are there any medicines or home remedies that I can try to feel a little better?

Brief Answer:
Upper respiratory tract infection.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Antibiotics would not help and irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days. Children often suffer from viral infections that may manifest with fever. If your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. If not, it would be a good idea to visit a doctor and to get the child evaluated.

You need to give steam inhalation to your child. It helps in reducing the congestion. Just sit with your child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear saline nasal drops in case of nose block. Give Nasivion only if steam inhalation does not provide full relief.

Give him some antiallergic like cetirizine once daily for next few days. Gurgling with lukewarm water should provide relief in case of throat problems. Pathological testing is unlikely to help.

Please be patient. The illness will gradually go away.

Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.

Brief Answer:
Just the same

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. For an adult I would recommend exactly the same (except for the fact that the adult does not need to sit on anybody's lap and can get steam inhalation on his own).
