Brief Answer:
He may be starting to develop herpes zoster or shingles

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, it is sad to know what your husband had been experiencing lately. Based on the history you have shared, it can be herpes zoster or shingles of some nerve route, which might have started to develop. It's possible to experience itching and pain even before onset of vesicles or herpes rash. other possibilities like trigeminal neuralgia also need to be ruled out. If opening and closing of jaw is tender or painful or any associated swelling is experienced an OPG ((Orthopantomogram) to look for teeth roots might be done to rule out other causes within the bone or muscles.

At this time he can use OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or ibuprofen for symptomatic relief. If the rash develops kindly get consultation by a dermatologist for antiviral like acyclovir topical or oral.

If pain is severe he may need more potent pain killers which work well with the nerve pains like Gabapentin or Duloxetine after discussing with your primary doctor.

Wishing him a quick recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
Regards.
