Suggest Treatment For Thrombophlebitis In The Leg

default
Posted on Sat, 9 Sep 2017
Question: My friend has thrombophlebitis in her leg from mid thigh down. She has had it for at least two weeks. She has been on eloquis during this time. A ultrasound done yesterday shows no improvement and possibly more involvement than initially. She has had no lab work to check how thin her blood is. What kind of lab work is appropriate for this drug and how often should it be done? Since there seems to be no progress in treatment would it be better to change to warfarin? What is involved with changing drugs at this point? My friend and I are both RNs and would like to understand this much better. The doctor is not helpful. Brief Answer:
INR is done to monitor dose of Eloquis and warfarin

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
Sorry for the delay.
I will try to answer your query to best of my knowledge.

Thrombophlebitis is inflammation of veins.
In your case, your friend is suffering from thrombophlebitis of the leg.

Thrombophlebitis is treated with compression and anti-inflammatory drugs.
Thrombophlebitis can lead to embolism in the blood which can reach any part of the body like lungs, brain etc and cause dangerous occlusion of blood vessels and hence damage to that organ.
In order to prevent occurrence of embolism, certain drugs are given like Eloquis and warfarin.

Thus, these drugs have a role in the prevention of embolism and not the treatment of thrombophlebitis.
Eloquis and warfarin dose is monitored by investigation- INR.
Thus, your friend needs to get INR done at a laboratory and the target values are between 2.5 and 3.5.

I hope this answers your query.
If you have more queries, I will be glad to answer.

Thanks and take care
