Question: I have just been told I have thickening of the uterus lining. What does this mean?

Endometrial thickening is diagnosed when this lining is thicker than 5 mm in width.
In some cases there may be no associated symptoms eg bleeding whereas other women may have bleeding along with the thickening.
If bleeding is present then further investigations are needed. Generally a biopsy of the endometrium is done so that a sample can be seen in the lab.
This would determine if the changes are dangerous or benign.
In the absence of bleeding, if the lining is less than 11 mm on ultrasound and there are no other suspicious changes on ultrasound, then biopsy is not needed.
