My MD's took me off of B Blockers to see if it would help my Sob but it hasn't actually I think it has gotten worse. I had a normal Stress test and Echo 1 1/2 years ago. My Doctors act like it is all in my head

Brief Answer:
likely your symptoms are somatic/psychological in origin

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

B blocker is generally contraindicated when person has any respiratory problem as it may worsen respiratory problem. In your case after stopping B blocker your shortness of breath has worsen and it suggests that your problem is likely anxiety based. Your Sob is due to anxiety not due to respiratory cause. So your doctor is probably right that all in your head.B blocker rather works like anti anxiety so chances are there that after stopping the same your anxiety has increased.

Your allergy tests, stress test and 2 D Echo are normal that is really good.

But I would tell these somatic symptoms of anxiety. I can understand that symptoms you are feeling are real for you and you need the treatment.

Cymbalta is really good drug to treat such somatic symptoms. Carry on with it according to your doctor's advice.

If I were your treating doctor I would like to add flupirtine maleate and very low dose benzodiazepine like klonopin or ativan for short duration to treat your somatic and anxiety symptoms.

Feel free to discuss further.

regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.

Sorry, I don't agree with your answer. I am a retired RN for 35 years. Does psychosomatic, psychological issues cause you to be so SOB that your relatives and friends notice something is wrong? I have taken benzo's before and do not want to take and get addicted to them. I'm not having panic and/or anxiety attacks. Your answer definitely agrees with the statistics that women are misdiagnosed when it comes to heart disease not that I want anything like that but I know these symptoms are not in my head.

Brief Answer:
yes your relative/friends can note your Sob though it is psychosomatic

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for follow up.

I respect and understand your comments and feelings.

I wanted to tell you that you Sob is not due to respiratory or cardiac origin as per your doctor's opinion. But of course it is there and it can be seen by your relatives and friends which they feel as something is wrong. Even you have Sob and I am not denying that at all. Your symptoms are there but their origin is due to some neurochemical imbalance in brain.

Also note that firbromylagia is also one of disorders with psychosomatic basis. You can accept that diagnosis then your Sob is likely due to same phenomenon.

You are right that benzo are addictive but when it is taken under medical supervision it is wonderful drug for such problem.

Relaxation, meditation and psychotherapy may also work in your case to treat your symptoms.

I know that it is difficult to understand for someone to have such symptom and doctor says that it is psychological.
If there is no positive examination finding, investigation in favor of Sob which suggests some physical cause, please accept that it is psychological. Your acceptance will help in treatment.

I hope you read my answer in positive manner.

Take care.
