default
Posted on Thu, 16 Jun 2016
Question: Hi,
I have been diagnosed with having 2 parasites . I am on metragyl tabs 1200 mg per day.
The dose was 1600 mg but the side effects were awful so it was lowered .
Ive had head aches, nausea, itching skin intermittantly and this morning yellow diarhea. My poo has been pretty formed til thismorning and a darker brown than usual which is good for me in general. ( usually its pale brown and loose).
Ive also for 2 days had intermittant sweet taste that turns sour and very dry mouth.
Is this normal. Im most worried about the yellow poo.
Im still getting the bloating but not as bad as usual. I suspect maybe i have gerd as i get a bubbly feeling in my throat, have had this for a few weeks now.
Ive been on metragil for 5 days but some days only took 800 mg as i couldnt stand the side effects.
I did have 2 beers last night.
Im slso struggling with slcohol withdrawal as ive drunk 4 per day for 3 or 4 years approx.
What do you suggest please. I had bloods done last week including liver function and they were all normsl.
Plesse help.

Hello, and thanks for your question.

Metronidazole has a VERY serious reaction with alcohol. You should NEVER drink alcohol while taking metronidazole. All the symptoms you are having is caused by drinking alcohol with metronidazole. Stop drinking alcohol immediately.

Perhaps i shouldnt have mentioned the alcohol as that was just a one off.
I had all the other symptoms of the drug prior to that.
Did i mention aching joints, extreme tiredness, sore gums, burping, bubbling in throat, brown urine?
These have been other side effects through the course of the medicine.
Is it true to say this drug is bad for the liver, so we are jeopardising its health?
I have tead so much on this drug and with hundreds of dissatisfied patients.
I just need to know your thoughts as to whether i should stop taking yhis drug.
Thanks in advance.

Detailed Answer:
You said you've been drinking 4 drinks daily for several years. Did this stop recently?

Aching joints, tiredness, sore gums, burping, bubbling throat, and brown urine can all be caused by either parasitic infection and/or by alcohol use.

The drug is metabolized in the liver, but so is alcohol, and parasites effect the liver, so likely the medication is doing more good than harm.

The best thing for you to do is to stop drinking alcohol completely and to treat this parasitic infection adequately.

Sorry, i tried to use your private email but it said it was invalid...
Thank you for your prompt answer.
Yes I stopped drinking alcohol when I began metragyl.
I had all symptoms while taking this drug, I have never had the sore gums, yellow poo, white tongue, brown urine and the intense tiredness til taking this drug. These are new symptoms.
I also have blurrier vision than I did before. ( this symptom has been intermittant for about 6 months.
So is it fair to say I should continue the drug even if these new symptoms persist?
Thanks in advance ,
XXXX
Ps. I will stay off the alcohol.

Given this information, I would ask your doctor if there is an alternative drug you can use for the parasitic infection. It is always possible you are having a bad reaction to it. I would probably suggest a different medication, just be aware that alcohol and parasites can cause many of the symptoms you mention :)
