Suggest Treatment For Severe Leg Cramps

default
Posted on Thu, 17 Nov 2016
Question: I am experiencing severe cramping in my upper legs, including the insides and front muscles of both legs. This tends to happen when I am sitting in a comfortable chair, or, more specifically, when I begin to stand up. The cramps take my breath away, but I have learned that if I place weight on my feet and bend my back upright, I can "pull through" the cramping. Iam about to turn 70 and had never before experienced such cramping. Might this be related to diet or electrolyte imbalance? I have quite an active physical life, playing a lot of golf and working out in the yard a lot, as well as going to the gym, where I work out on an elliptical trainer for an hour.

Brief Answer:
Can be due to electrolyte imbalance.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

The cramping in the upper legs that you have can be due to an electrolyte imbalance, decreased fluid intake or due to a mild nerve root compression at the level of lower lumbar spine.

It is good that you are leading an active lifestyle. Doing dietary modifications, increasing fluid intake, Taking a multivitamin supplement and back strengthening exercises and calf stretches can help.
I hope this answers your query.
