Suggest Treatment For Severe Hair Fall

Posted on Thu, 8 Jan 2015
Question: Hello -

I have a question related to my hairfall. Can you advice on the below:

1- I wash my hair daily (with or without the shampoo). Is this ok? My hair is so thin that if I do not wash my hair, I cannot comb it properly. FYI, I have recently started using Arcolane shampoo based on advise from a dermatologist.
2- Based on advise from a dermatologist, I am using 'Regaine' and 'Tricomex' in the nights. Question is, can I still use coconut oil when needed? Or would this impact the medication?
3- Finally, is there anything in the diet that may impact hairfall? Just curious on this.

Appreciate your feedback.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Daily washing is fine; Minoxidil should be applied on thoroughly clean scalp; avoid oil

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

You seem to have Androgenetic alopecia, as I had also discussed with you in your earlier query to me. Your treatment is a clue to this diagnosis as well.

Daily washing is Ok and even daily shampooing is absolutely Ok because topical minoxidil that you are using at the scalp skin should be applied on thoroughly clean and dry scalp, twice daily. After washing you should also thoroughly dry (air dry) your hair if applied on wet scalp the concentration of minoxidil will get diluted.

Your shampoo contains Ketoconazole and it is an effective antidandruff preparation. Ketoconazole shampoo is recommended to be used with Minoxidil because topical Minoxidil solution can sometimes cause scaling/dandruff in some individuals as it is available in an alcoholic base, therefore it is drying.
Moreover, Ketoconazole being an antiandrogen exerts a positive local effect in Androgenetic alopecia.

Oiling is not advisable while you are using Topical Minoxidil and it would hamper the treatment.
Minoxidil being available in an alcohol base would not be able to mix with coconut oil and oil would form a film impermeable to minoxidil.
The recommendation is to apply Minoxidil on absolutely clean scalp. The purpose of daily shampoo is to clean the scalp every time before minoxidil is applied.

However, if you desire, you may use Coconut oil for just 2 hours before shampoo Or else you may use a conditioner after shampoo for dry, frizzy hair. Conditioners can be used along with Minoxidil

There is no particular diet which is beneficial in hair fall. However, you may increase protein intake because hair is all protein and nothing else i.e Keratin.
