Suggest Treatment For Severe Dizziness While On Atorvastatin

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Feb 2017
Question: Have been on Atvorstatin, 40 mg. for a very long time. Recently have had other health problems (dizziness and loss of balance) with no diagnosis of cause. Decided to take myself off Atvorstatin, then went for blood test after 4 months, only to find my cholesterol is 281, with a 181 ldl! Asked the Dr. to change my statin. He changed me from 40mg Atvorstatin to a 10 mg. Crestor. Is this a mistake on my part in changing?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that your actual cholesterol levels are a little high, which means that you need to start on a statin again.

I agree with the decision of your doctor on starting 10mg Crestor.

But, regarding the dizziness and loss of balance, I would recommend performing a Doppler ultrasound of the cervical arteries to exclude possible atherosclerotic narrowing which would cause low blood supply to the brain.

You should know that Crestor and Atorvastatin has similar adverse effects. Anyway, the possibility to have adverse effects related to this low dose of Crestor is really low.

So, relax and don't worry about it.

I would also recommend some lifestyle modifications to help reduce your cholesterol levels:

- reduce saturated fat and sugar food (butter, red meat, sweats, etc.)
- increase food reach in omega 3 fatty acids (fish, fish oil, walnuts, olive oil, etc.).
- perform a lot of aerobics.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
