Posted on Thu, 23 Jul 2015
Question: My son , 2.5 years old, has been suffering from cold & cough from around 7 days.

Though he has been taking cough syrup 'Protussa' , advised by child specialist, there is very little improvement in the cough. Specially in the night, during sleep the cough becomes very difficult with pain in the chest and throat.

Brief Answer:
needs re-examination and antibiotics if required

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
With your given history three possibilities come to my mind
1. Throat infection. This needs clinical examination and throat swab for streptococcal infection. If positive your doctor may prescribe antibiotics like amoxicillin for a week.
2. Chest congestion - this too needs to be clinically ruled out by examining your child. If present may require expectorant like ambroxol and antibiotics may be required too.
3. Bronchospasm which causes night cough. This needs nebulisations and bronchodilators like salbutamol.
Get your child examined.
Discuss these possibilities with your doctor.
Regards
Dr Arun
