Suggest Treatment For Sensitive Gums And Pain While Brushing Teeth
Question: Hi Doctor,
My mom has had sensitive gums for a year or two now. She has pain when brushing her teeth. There's red coloration just above her teeth (I have a photo). And, her gum at that region becomes red after brushing. There's no visible swelling and there's no bleeding. She says she hasn't noticed bad breath or loose teeth. She has been using sensitive toothpaste for 1 year.
2 days ago, she consulted a dentist. He rubbed a cotton on it and some skin came off. On seeing this, he told her to get a biopsy. She hasn't slept since then, she stopped going to office. I'm also very depressed. Worse yet, the surgeon is available only next week.
I read online that Gingivitis can cause these symptoms. But, why did our doctor prescribe a biopsy? How probable is a gum cancer? Are there other symptoms I can check by myself?

As per your history & reports, it seems to be a case of gingivitis that occurs due to depositipn of plaque causing inflammation of gums leading to bleeding gums.I dont think she needs to go for biopsy so early.Ask her to get deep subgingival scaling done followed by using gum paint for gum massage.If problem still persists then go for biopsy.
She may use ornidazole or metronidazole gumpaint.

But anyway, would gingivitis last so long? That's my concern. Also, are there any other symptoms salient to a cancer that we can observe?

Gingivitis doesn't resolves until you get scaling done.All your symptoms indicate gingivitis.Hence go for scaling.Secondly cancer patients have following complaints:-
- red or whitish patch since 6 months
- unhealing ulcer since 3 months
- difficulty in mouth opening
- inability to protrude tongue
- history of tobacco chewing
Your mom has none of these.
Hence needn't worry & first go for scaling.
Meanwhile ask her to do gum massage.
Maintain good oral hygiene.

But doctor, she has had the sensitive gum issue for 2 years now. That's why I'm worried.
