Question: I have a job offer from Saudi Arabia and has been asked to do GAMCA test, Am worried because I have a sickle cell anaemia though in good health but my heamoglobin level averages 85g/l for past 6 months. Is there any possibility I might pass the GAMCA test

Brief Answer:
There are ways to increase the hemoglobin levels

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

GAMCA (GCC Approved Medical Centers Association) medical test is essential to be passed if you are to work in Saudi. With the current hemoglobin level you would not be able to pass the GAMCA medical test. However, there are ways to increase the hemoglobin levels, either
* by taking iron supplements (you would have to get the serum iron levels first to rule out diseases like sickle cell anemia where there can be an iron overload) but it would take some time for the hemoglobin level to rise.
* by getting a blood transfusion. The results are fast but short lived.

In any case, visit a doctor and discuss the situation. Do not attempt the GAMCA test without certainty of passing, else your door to the middle east would get closed.

Hello

When I had the test it here in UK its 85g/l but the Saudi requirements is must not be less than 10g/100ml. How does this conversion works out considering UK is g/l can you interpret better ?

Secondly I understand UAE are not part of the GAMCA test and they do have their requirements albeit heamoglobin test is inclusive. With low level Heamoglobin do you think I might be ok with UAE I understand for they are quite less strict

Brief Answer:
Your current hemoglobin level is 8.5 g/dl

Detailed Answer:
Your current hemoglobin level is 8.5 g/dl (or g/100 ml) which is equivalent to 85g/l. This has to rise to 10 g/dl.
I am not aware of the relaxations pertaining to UAE but I would insist you to play safe and to try to raise the hemoglobin levels before you attempt the medicals.
