Suggest Treatment For Persistent Diarrhea And Vomiting

Posted on Wed, 18 Jan 2017
Question: My 22 year old daughter ate at a Mexican restaurant around 1pm today and started feeling sick around 5pm. She's vomiting every 20 minutes and can't keep anything down. She also has diahera but that is subsiding. I've given her Dramamine but she only lasted 22 minutes with that and then threw it up. I gave her another half a pill and I'm seeing how she's doing. She's gone 10 minutes on that. Little sips of water. No fever. Temperature is normal.

Brief Answer:
Acute gastroenteritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query,

I have read through your query and can understand your concern,

From the description that you have provided, your daughter seems to be having symptoms pertaining to an acute gastroenteritis. It is good to hear that her diarrhea is subsiding.

I would suggest you to do the following:

- Since her vomiting is still persisiting, it would be better to start her on oral rehydration solution available over the counter, which is rich in all the necessary nutrients needed to replenish her nutritional loss; give in oral sips.
I would not advise to give gatorade sips for now. Yes, you can give her ginger tea.

- It is not medically advisable to give immodium as though it will help in stopping diarrhea.

- Also she does require a course of antibiotics. If I was her treating physician, I would start her on a course of ofloxacin and ornidazole combination, which is enough to treat both aerobic and anaerobic organisms. Just check with your physician if she shares the same opinion.

- Also start her on domperidone or ondansetran anti- emetics which is effective in omiting during gastroenteritis. Dramamine is dimenhydrinate which is useful in motion sickness.

Hope this helps
