Suggest Treatment For Persistent Diarrhea And Vomiting

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jul 2015
Question: My 4 year old daughter has had diarrhea since last night and now is throwing up in addition to continued diarrhea. She has eaten very little today and has slept quite a bit. We are on vacation at Lake Cumberland and she was swimming in the lake quite a bit yesterday and may have swallowed lake water. Her temperature is 98.8 under her armpit. Is this likely a virus, or what other possible conditions could this be?

Brief Answer:
Most likely it is a viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for the query

The most common cause of fever, loose motion and vomiting in this age is viral gastroenteritis.
The main aim of management is to prevent of dehydration by improving the oral acceptance and giving plenty of fluids.

So I would suggest you to give some antiemetic like domperidone or ondensetron to control the vomiting(it is very important to increase the oral intake).
Give plenty of ORS(fluids) with Zinc and probiotic for early recovery from diarrhea.

If vomiting is persistent, she is not accepting fluids well orally or you have noticed decreased frequency of urine:please consult a doctor as she may need to be rehydrated by other means(IV fluids).
I hope this helps.
Please do ask if you have any more query.
Wish your child speedy recovery.
Regards
