Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2016
Question: For the past three of four days now my ankles have been swollen. Yesterday and today they have been very swollen causing me so much pain today. I am hardly walking and I am starting to panic because I can not control the pain, which I have hardly eaten end slept in three days. Is there anything I can do to help with the pain and decrease the pain and hopefully it will help me sleep, At this point I am very foggy and I hope I am making sense. This has never happened before, I have had no new chances in meds, and I have always worked on my feet for a very long time.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome

Your concern is appreciated

There are many causes for swollen ankle in your case it seems to be injury to the joint or its surrounding structures like ligaments as it occur in ankle sprain as you said you use it alot also it depend upon how acute was the swelling , other causes include osteoarthritis which can also occur secondary to injury to the ankle , other are rhematoid arthritis, lupus, gout, psoriatic arthritis, reactive arthritis, infectious arthritis. If the problem is not in the joint , there is no pain while moving the joint and the whole feet is swollen the there may be causes like venous insufficiency or ischemia, celluitis, edema food due cardiac , kidney or liver problems but they are bilateral. You can be advised to do x ray foot , u/s ankle joint, blood test like TLC and ANA and uric acid level etc to look for the cause. As for pain ice packs can be applied, complete rest, anti inflammatory like NSAIDS, aspiration can also be done and sent for examination if there is collection on U/S it can also help to reduce pain, intraartucular steroids cam help in some cases, use of more powerful painkillers can be opted.

Hope it helps
Thanks
