Small Sore On Thumb, Swelling, Numbness In Hand, Swollen Left Ankle. Causes And Cure?

I m asking for my 22 yr old daughter. She had a small sore appear on her thumb . Later that day her hand swelled a bit and felt somewhat numb. The next day the same thing happened on her other hand and arm . Today she says her left ankle has pain and is swollen. No scab this time. Each area recovers before it moves on to the next.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for posting,

From your description it is very possible that your daughter is having acute gout attacks (if gout runs in the family then the probability is more likely). If that be the case, then she will require specific antigouts medications such as allopurinol and colchicine to treat the gout.
Another possibility is polyarthritis (septic) which will require treatment with antibiotics and NSAID or SAID.
Allergic reaction is possible but very unlikely given the scenario. Other causes such as multiple cellulitis might be considered but very very rare as presentation is very very atypical.
You will need her to consult a doctor as soon as you can go to the hospital so that she can properly be examined and appropriate treatment given.

Hope this helps
Dr. Bernard
