Question: I am going through a lot of stress, mostly due to resent retirement. Often in the morning , when I wake up, I have irrational thoughts. An example being, I will think of someone, I may have met, or not met, but I cannot place where I know that person. So I spend time obsessing on that thought. Are these types of thoughts common in times of high stress ?

Retirement is a significant stress. Stress manifest with various ways like sadness, irritation, poor concentration, forgetfulness, reduced appetite, reduced sleep, unnecessary worries and pre-occupation with silly and absurd thoughts etc.

You should start a health promoting lifestyle in form of early morning awakening before sunrise, daily yoga/meditation, morning walk/jog, evening sports/workouts, healthy diet with plenty of fruits,salads and sprouts, listening your favourite/relaxing music at evening, talking to your good friends/well wishers, spending some time with pet and near nature, enough rest,recreation and adequate sleep at night. This lifestyle will help you in recovery from this illness.

Even after following this lifestyle if you feel yourself stressed then you must consult a psychiatrist who may assess you in details for your symptoms and prescribe few medicines for a short period of time to cure.
