default
Posted on Tue, 18 Oct 2016
Question: My son has numbness in right foot, lower right leg, and mildly in both hands. He has had an MRI done of his back which was normal. He has loss of movement in his foot. The doctor wants to do a nerve study. What can a nerve study diagnose? He hasn't had any blood work done which I think is unusual.

Brief Answer:
We do Nerve Studies to know "Where is the Problem"

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HealthCareMagic.com I am Dr.J XXXXXXX Anto Bruno Mascarenhas. I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help you.

Your Son has
1. Weakness : Loss of Foot Movement
2. Numbness

This can be due to
1. Problems in Cerebrum
2. Problems in Brain Stem
3. Problems in CV Junction
4. Problems in Spinal Cord
5. Problems in Nerve Roots
6. Problems in Nerves

You have done a MRI Back
That will rule out problems in Spinal Cord

Now
Nerve Conduction Study is required to see whether there problem is in Nerves or in Brain

Blood Works may be needed after Nerve Conduction Studies to know the cause of problem

ie
We do Nerve Studies to know "Where is the Problem"
Blood Tests will tell "What is the problem"

Hope you found the answer helpful.
