Question: Last night I coughed up snot that had blood in it. Later I blew my nose and it was bloody. I have
allergies and use Zertec D and Flonase. I am also a smoker. The night before this I had to fast
for 12 hours for blood work at the lab. I missed taking the Flonase that day until the evening.
Also that afternoon my mouth became very dry. Could it clear up in a few days? I just don't
know what could have happened,

Brief Answer:
Probably not significant but discuss with your dr. Friday.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

Well, it is always concerning to cough up blood, but it sounds like you have an identifiable source for the bleeding - your bloody nose - rather than something going on in your lungs.

It's possible that the combination of being without the Zyrtec - D and Flonase allowed your mucus membranes to be more irritated, but it could just be a fluke. As someone who also uses intranasal steroids I and patients who take anything you stick in your nose including Flonase, have experienced minor nasal bleeding from time to time. If the nose bleeding is copious and continuous, then do go to the ER or an urgent care clinic, but otherwise it is most likely mild irritation. Your doctor will look in your nose Friday to make sure there are no other abnormalities.

I am not concerned about the dry mouth. This might have been from restarting the Zyrtec with decongestant.

I hope this information puts you mind at ease. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.
