Question: My son has not been right for a while now. He is 36 and has been portraying symptoms of self importance (big time), argumentative, monopolizing conversations, always has to be right, extremely angry young man, puts down his sister every chance he gets to the point he makes her cry. Between his sister and myself, we are taking him and his wife and my grandson to Disney in October on a free vacation because they do not have the money to go but in the last four months that this was decided, he has done nothing but disrespect us and put us down and basically thumb his nose at us. Last week he blocked his sister from facebook. My husband wants to tell him he is not going to Disney with us because of the way he is acting. Yet, a couple weeks ago he came over to the house, and he seemed like the old XXXXXXX we remember. What could cause this in this young man. Footnote--he brags about making 6 figures a year, yet he has no money and owes me money (between his father and I we do not make more than $75,000).

Thank you--I was afraid it could be bipolar or a manic depressive disorder. I do work in a hospital as did my husband before he was disabled. I just wanted confirmation that I wasn't crazy. I know some of the causes can be stress, illness, money problems and drugs. My son and his wife had a very hard time trying to conceive and after 3 miscarriages finally had a full term healthy baby. However, after 6 months, her mother made her quit a very good job paying $80,000/year and in the past my son was involved between the age of 16-21 with heavy drugs. Can these factors now produce his disorder?

I appreciate your advice to have him be seen by a therapist and psychiatrist but that would be absolutely out of the question--he would never hear that he has this problem. It would be everyone else that has a problem and not him. Unfortunately, that's where the biggest problem is.
