Question: I am completing 1 week of antibiotics for UTI however, I still have lower back pain, fever and chills. Seems like it may be a kidney infection? I have had it before.

Brief Answer:
Perhaps...Change in antibiotic, and further diagnostic tests recommended..

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concern.

You report to:
- have UTI
- currently on antibiotics (nitrofurantoin mono-mcr) since 7 days now
- still having symptoms of: back pain, fever, chills

At this point, I'd like to know if:
- the symptoms have the same intensity or lessened/worsen?
- any analgesic or urine antiseptics recommended so far?

If I was your caring doctor would advise to run further diagnostic tests like:
- urine analysis
- urine culture and sensitivity testing
- abdominal ultrasound
- kidney function test
- complete blood count

to determine whether the infection has spread to your kidneys or just in lower urinary tract pathways.

Furthermore, change in antibiotic is recommended as long as nitrofurantoin has not helped in subsiding the symptoms totally.

Until you discuss this with your doctor, I advise to take an OTC pain killer like mephenamic acid or spasmex and to take OTC urine antiseptic like those containing cranberry.

Increase of water intake is highly recommended too.

Wish fast recovery!
