Posted on Mon, 8 Jun 2015
Question: Hi,

I had terrible lower back pain two days back, it hurt while standing or sitting or even lying down. It later progressed to abdominal pain which was and lasted till the next day. I took a combiflam on the first day, it seemed so lessen for a while and returned after the effect of the pain killer. I also felt constipated and stuffed. So I also tried gelusil & ajwain. Today it feels better but there is still slight pain near the abdomen and back. The pain seems to have moved. Is it just gas or am I required to run some tests?

Brief Answer:
Could be a back muscle strain or due to Lamotrigine

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Sorry about the terrible pain you must be having. Good that it has been subsiding. Can you describe more about the pain? How did it start and what do you think caused it? How severe was it initially and now how severe is it, on a scale of 0-10 with 10 being the severe-most pain. Also is this the first episode or is there a prior history?
And sometimes back pain too tends to cause constipation when pain is really achy. We tend to suppress bowel movements and hence cause constipation. If you feel too bloated then I would suggest using Syrup Mucaine twice a day 10ml before taking food. You can have it for 5 days. Also take a prescription tablet Pan 40mg once a day; half an hour before lunch for a week. I think we can wait for 2-3 days if pain is not getting severe before going for any tests. Meanwhile try diet rich in fibers like cucumbers, bhendi and more beans. If pain isn't decreasing take Dolo 650mg four times a day. Do not carry heavy weights or bend forward or down at your back. Do not strain while evacuating bowels or it will aggravate the backache. Lamotrigine tablet too can cause such symptoms if you have started it recently. But DO NOT change the dose or do anything about it without consulting your neurologist.
If you have any doubts do get back without any hesitation.

Stay in good health.
Regards,
Pradeep
