Suggest Treatment For Leg Pain Post A Clindamycin Shot

Posted on Tue, 16 Feb 2016
Question: Hi there.

I just started this morning a treatment with clindamycin injections. I will have one every 12 hours. I do have some questions if possible.

1. Even thou the shot itself didn't hurt that much, i can still feel some pain when i walk. Considering that i still have 5 days of shots will it get better?

2. After the shot at some small time i started getting verry sleepy and developed a bitter taste in my mouth that is still with me.

3. I take 10 mg of escitalopram every day. I'm guessing there is no interaction?

4. I started taking vitamic c, probiotic and some stomach omeprazole as i have a bit of a sensitive stomach.

Thank you for your time.

Hello XXXXXXX

Welcome and thanks for your queries.
1. The medicine is injected into your muscle and there will be some pain with the contraction of the muscle when you walk till it is absorbed fully. If the pain becomes worse or if there is any redness or swelling, you should see your doctor and have it examined.
2. Bitter taste may be related to the medicine.
3. There is no interaction between Escitalopram and Clindamycin. But there is an interaction between Omeprazole and Escitalopram and it may increase the blood level of escitalopram. It is better to use Pantoprazole in place of omeprazole as it does not have this adverse effect.
4. Vitamin C is acidic and large doses can cause burning in the abdomen.

Hello and thank you for the answer. I talked with my doc. about escitalopram and omeprazol and she said it's safe if i take omeprazol in the morning. I still don't see any thoughts on the sleep/fatigue that has been following me all day.

Brief Answer:
May be due to the infection.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back .
Sleep and fatigue can be due to the infection for which you have been started on Clindamycin or can be a symptom of depression.

Thank you for your answer. One other small question. Is the fact that the antibiotics are made by injections still irritating my stomach and if yes is the omeprazole helping?

Detailed Answer:
The irritation in the stomach can be from a local effect as when you swallow a tablet or from the systemic effect, which is usually less than the local effect. So an injection avoids the local irritation but not the systemic effect.
Omeprazole decreases the acid secretion in the stomach. So any condition which increases acid secretion or produces inflammation which is worsened by the acid can be helped by omeprazole.
