Brief Answer:
that is the only option

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Usually stones of sizes below 5mm can be passed just through urine.
The internal diameter of ureters is around 4 to 5 mm from which maximum to maximum 8 to 9 mm stone can be passed with great difficulty or usually they are shattered inside the ureter by lithotripsy.
As you said the stone is 2cm which is like 20 mm. As I have mentioned above the size of ureters, its impossible to remove the stone by natural methods.
So the only remaining option remains is to directly reach the kidney and get the stone out from there directly.
So even I agree with your doctor that the stone will be removed by approaching kidney from back and get the stone out.
They can attempt breakage or shattering the stone inside and getting out the stone but it might damage surrounding kidney tissue. So its better to approach directly from back and get it out.
I hope I have answered your query well.
If you have any questions kindly ask me back.
Thank you
