Suggest Treatment For Intense Eye Pain While Having Lyme Disease

Posted on Wed, 6 Jan 2016
Question: I am going through allot of complicated health issues. First-I have acute Lyme disease(and was bitten again back in June). I have a Candida issue, and so I try to avoid antibiotic use at all costs.I did a holistic protocol, but the headaches became too intense, so I had to switch to conventional antibiotic treatment. I took 3 100Mgs of Doxycycline, and after that I had the most unbearable headache I ever had. I called the Lyme specialist and he told to stop the Doxy, and wait a few days-I am now on Zithromax for the last five days, and it seems to be helping a little bit. The pressure headaches are devastating. along with intense eye pain. I have been to an eye doctor three times in the last 6 days, and each time I have had my eyes dilated(the same doctor twice, and a Lyme eye specialist another time).so far everything has checked out wiyj my eyes. Are you familiar with Lyme related pressure headaches that are accompanied by eye pain?

I have a couple of more questions: Is it likely that after only 3 pills of Doxycycline-I could get Intracranial Hypertension-as I understand that is a rare symptom of Doxycycline. Also, is it OK to have your eyes dilated 3 times in one week. Thirdly. as a drug interaction, is it Ok to take Zithromax and Diflucan at the same time.

Thanks-I will await your response, XXXX

Brief Answer:
Following answers to your queries

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and my answers to your queries are as following :

1. One common symptom of Lyme disease includes headaches (severe, recurring ) accompanied by pain in /behind the eyes.

2. Doxycycline is known to cause intracranial hypertension which is clinically expressed by headaches, or eye pain.

How soon after taking doxycycline the headache starts depends on individual characteristics. In your case, it started 3 days after starting doxycycline, other patients have reported after one week or longer.

3. Having your eyes dilated is necessary fir a complete eye examination. There is no problem in having them checked dilated 3 times within a week unless you report specific problems.

4. If used together, zythromax (azythromycin ) with diflucan (Fluconazole ) can increase chances for abnormal heart rhythm. Wait to finish zythromax treatment first, then start diflucan.

Hope it answered to your queries.

I took 2 100 Mgs of Doxy pills a week ago Friday night, and a 1100Mgs pill on Saturday morning, and that same Saturday afternoon the really bad headaches started(not 3 days later)-only 3 pills in total. Even if by some rare chance, I did get Intracranial Hypertension-wouldn't it have reversed itself when I ceased taking the Doxy(and the fact that my eyes have been diagnosed all 3 times as being Ok) Today was the day that I had the 3rd eye exam, with my eyes being dilated. It just seems that it is taking longer for my dilation to subside-it's been about 6 hours, and I am still somewhat dilated-this was a different doctor. Thanks your response regarding Zithro/Dilucan-I will confirm with Cardio specialist tomorrow. I will await your response.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for providing additional information.

It will take a few days to get the effects (such as intracranial hypertension headache ) of doxycycline off.

With regards to dilated eyes, do not worry as they will get normal again although it might need more time.

At the end, you can get back to me after consulting with cardiologist.

Let me know if you have further questions, I'll be happy to assist you further.

Dr.Albana
