Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
1. An Average blood pressure of 157/85 mmHg over a long period of time is something which requires attention. A few life style modifications which can be of help is daily meditation / relaxation exercises, moderation in salt intake and daily exercise (only as much as she can do comfortably).
2. Literature is not very clear about treating patients of this age with medication and its outcomes. However in my practice I usually treat them with lowest possible dose of drugs. These may be 2.5mg of amlodipine or 20mg of telmisartan. Amlodipine is usually my first choice. Before starting telmisartan in any patient we have to look for serum creatinnie levels, serum potassium levels and ultrasound of kidneys and we need to monitor these levels after 2-3 weeks too. The requirement of medication in such patients is usually life long, however they may see some drug free periods especially during summers. You will have to get a prescription of any of two depending upon her profile from your local physician after discussing with him.
Please feel free to discuss further.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder
