Question: My blood pressure has become very high. it's 160 over 85. I was 120 over 70 abour a month ago. I have been on medication for this of many years to control it. I recently went on a diet and noticed that my blood pressure was very low, so I stopped one of my high blood pressure pills and it seemed to be fine. My husband has major surgery on May 5 and and developed a blood clot and an infection. So needless to say I was not monitoring my blood pressure.

Brief Answer:
The medication strategy seems good

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

I think that one should not discontinue or be started on a certain medical treatment, especially anti-hypertensive, without first consulting the doctor. You see, the anti-hypertensive treatment and control of the blood pressure is established by a certain number of drugs which construct a body of plateau levels and continuously "fight" high blood pressure. Sudden discontinuation of one of the drugs may, although temporarely, dysregulate the blood pressure control. Even with this fact being stated, discontinuation of one drug, would not explain the blood pressure to such levels. Without further adding treatment, because I think you are on a good-structured and effective strategy of fighting your high blood pressure, I would suggest that you are going through some tough time, since your husband had health problems. This causes high levels of stress and stress, in turn, is characterized with spikes of blood pressure levels. At this moment, I would recommend you to continue your medication regimen and only when you are calmer, maybe you should start monitoring your blood pressure again and keep a diary of various measurements during a day. If even when you are relaxed, the figures are as high as those provided, then we can discuss about adding another drug to your regimen.

Hope your husband gets better and wish you the best of help.

I hope my answer is helpful. I am happy to help, if yoi have follow-up questions.

Kind regards,
Dr. Meriton
