Detailed Answer:
Hi,XXXX,
Thanks for the query under HCM.
As we grow up, it becomes our moral duty to look after our elderly parents. I appreciate/ understand your concern.
High blood pressure is a common finding in elderly, and it is mandatory to be well managed to prevent it's troublesome complications.
Naturally earliest evaluation of the cause & extent of it's effects are to be found , as soon as it is diagnosed.,followed by the medications, life style changes implemented as per expert advise. In this view I would suggest you to-

* Get your mother examined by a physician preferably a cardiologist. Physical examinations along with few investigations to pin point the cause/ the s extent it has affected.
- Usually-measurement of blood pressure at least thrice at different time & place/ measuring blood pressure in different postures is done before doctor can get exact level/grade of blood pressure.
- Investigations include routine blood counts, urine analysis, blood sugar ( both fasting & post meal), Thyroid function test, ECG, X ray chest & angiography as per need.
- Examination of eyes.
* Many varieties of anti hypertensives are available for treating blood pressure The medicine that suits your mother / her health ,will be chosen by your doctor,Along with medications to treat the cause...which needs to be taken regularly.
* Home care- Blood pressure also needs many things to be done on personal level. This helps good control & prevents further damage.
- Maintain ideal body weight.
- avoid salt ( sodium) intake.
- regular physical activity - your mother can start having a walk at medium pace 20- 45 minutes ,as per her capacity, gradually increasing the time .
- Start yoga exercises,/ pranayama under expert guidance/ do mind concentration & meditation- this helps in being +ve., relieves tension & helps lowering blood pressure.
- Engage in company/ work/ hobbies she loves.
- Eat more of fresh fruits & salads,
- avoid taking alcohol.
- Include regular periodic check up by her doctor in her routine.
* I feel, you should take her to your doctor first, he will evaluate her health, get some investigations done & refer her to cardiologist for his expert advise.
- start with the medicines advised & home care.. blood pressure would soon be in control.
She has to maintain it & her lifestyle changes she starts -- through out life & be free from more troublesome health issues.
I feel, the information give is both informative & useful to you.In case you have any follow up query, I would be happy to help.
Wish your mother a fast recovery.
