Question: What would cause me to have a yo yo blood pressure? I have been treating my high blood pressure since I was 25 and I am now 66. I have a blood pressure monitor and I have had it checked so I know it's ok. The other night I went from a reading of 69 over 34 to a pressure of 240 over 115 with in 2 consecutive readings. I was ready to have my husband take me to the hospital until the next reading went from high back to normal. It has been this way since I was a child in grade school.

Brief Answer:
Related to sympathetic nervous system overactivity.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
Blood pressure is related to the cardiac output , amount of blood pumped out of the heart per minute and the vascular resistance of the arteries. Therefore if you have very fluctuant blood pressure, these values are changing more than the usual.
These changes are related to the activities of the sympathetic nervous system and is mediated by hormones like adrenaline and noradrenaline.
One of the factors responsible is the emotional state of mind. When anxious or excited, the hormones are more and leads to increased heart rate and cardiac output. At the same time the vascular resistance of the arteries also increase, thereby increasing the blood pressure.
On the other hand if you are relaxed and not excited, the hormones are less and therefore the blood pressure and heart rate would be lower.
If you have not been tested for pheochromocytoma, it may be done as the blood pressure can vary very much with this.
