Suggest Treatment For Headaches During Menstruation

Posted on Tue, 29 Aug 2017
Question: Sir,
I am 40 years women having two sons. For last 12 years I am having headache. Earlier I was experiencing headache just after a Bus or Train Journey. But gradually, it is appearing frequently. Particularly, during or just after my monthly periods, it appears and lasts for 3 to 4 days. Headache is severe, followed by vomiting and disturbance in my stomach. Further, I have chronic acidity problem and poor diet. Either headache is one side of the head or near eye brow. It moves from one part to another part of my head. My eye's color becomes red/yellowish during headache. Doctors say it as "Migraine" and simply suggest some pain killer. During 2012-13, even I had been to a Neurologist and a Gastroenterology for all tests. But nothing found. I am writing this because it is unbearable for me. My 1st day of monthly period was 28th July'2017 and headache started from 31st July and still continuing. I got some relaxation on 5th and 6th Aug'2017. But today again I have headache with vomiting. I am taking Domestal to control the vomiting and Algina 650 as pain killer. I have been suggested with Omeprazole also.
Pl. suggest me what more to do ?

Brief Answer:
Follow treatment and prevention as advised for migraine

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concern.
The headache is migraine associated with menstruation called as menstrual migraine.
This occurs due to hormonal changes associated with menstruation.
For prevention you should take timely breakfast and lunch.
Avoid fasting, excessive tea or coffee or chocolates.
Avoid excessive sunlight exposure or loud sounds.
Prophylactic pain killers like naproxen or mefenamic acid can be started 1-2 days before expected onset of migraine.
If episodes are many in a month then prophylaxis treatment is required with drugs like flunarizine, propranolol, topiramate or divalproate.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
