Question: I care for a 99 year old woman as part of a team. Hospice has provided us with a kit that contains Haldol and lorizipan. Some aides give her a haldol when she gets starts acting out, This happened last Thursday afternoon and by Sunday she was active, hallucinating and did not sleep for almost 36 hours. I am against using Haldol but can't seem to convince a few of my team mates. Please advise and perhaps suggest a better alternative to calm her when she is confused. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Haldol is not recommended in elderly due to exaggerated side effects

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms, haldol is a drug that has a wide spectrum of side effects that include trouble sleeping, restlessness, involuntary muscle movements , blurred vision, drowsiness, decreased immunity, muscle stiffness , fever, irregular heart beats that could be fatal
alternatives include Thorazine or abil but they need to be prescribed by a doctor.
lorizipan also can worsen sleep disorders and can cause aggression and hallucinations.
I hope I answered your question. if you don't have any other clarifications then please close the discussion.
