Question: My husband age 74 has frequent cough with phlym, spitting up, worsening in morning. Frequent choking on "crumbs", he says, when eating. Even going to bed, lies down, and cough again. It has worsened over past 2 - 3 weeks. He smokes one pack of cigs daily. Has tried patches to quit in past, but then smokes also, and fails to quit. He thinks it is pollen in air. Frequent blows nose. Weight 164, lost 20 lbs over past two years. Could this be symptoms of COPD.

Brief Answer:
Yes this looks like COPD.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,

Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.

Yes it looks like COPD. Even if he has pollen and other allergies it's more likely COPD than asthma in view of his smoking. He will have to take treatment for the same for which he must consult a Pulmonologist.

He needs to undergo investigations esp. a chest X-ray to rule out anything else in view of his smoking history. The most important step in treatment is smoking cessation which he must do at the earliest.

Hope this answers your query.

Feel free to come back if you have any more queries.

Take care.

I am a 23 old male who quit smoking cigarettes about two months ago and drink alcohol only really on the weekends. I have a re-occuring pain in my upper stomach/sternum area and it feels like I have been punched in the stomach. It does not see to help to go to the bathroom or take pepto bismol or tums. It does not seem like gas or heartburn , and it happens randomly, not after a meal often so it doesnt seem like indigestion. I realize I need to see my doctor but is there any tests I can do at home or something I can do to help the pain?

Hi, I am from Bhutan. I have an external itch on my Adam s apple. I have serious GERD because of hiatus hernia (diagnosed in March 2011). Are these related - the itch outside and the acid inside? After how long can GERD+Hiatus Hernia lead to throat or esophageal cancer? I guess, I am a little worried. By the way, I quit smoking (after 18 years) and drinking (generally beer, after 8 years) in August 2010. Today, I drink moderately, say 10 times a year. However, I haven t touched a cigarette since I quit it in 2010. I get severe heartburns, and of late I can feel the acid up my throat. My diet is plain red/brown rice and lentils and other vegetables. But my condition has been worsening and I am beginning to have a phobia of food, because I dread the contents rushing up my throat because of wet burps, and of course I get this feeling that food only worsens my condition. I am seriously mulling surgical correction now. Please advise me.

I ve had this pain in the lower right side of my ribs for 4 days now. it s worse than it was the 1st day but about the same as yesterday. I can t exactly tell if it s my ribs or directly underneath. It hurts when i sneeze, cough, stretch, laugh. Hurts to touch it. I don t know if It s serious enough to see a Dr. or to just wait it out and let it go away on its own. Also, I had bronchitis last month. The coughing has almost ceased as of 2 weeks ago. But I still have a cough every now and again daily, but it s not bronchitis. It comes from my throat. I just recently quit smoking about a month ago. So the continued cough could be from that.

I have discovered yesterday that I am allergic to the generic wellbutrin....hives all over and taking benedryl. That I can deal with, however, I ve had chest pain pretty much nonstop. I have taken antiacids, but they don t help. I am not sure if a heart attack on a female (43) would go on so long. Had nausea as well. I had blood clots in my right lung in 07 that almost killed me. This happened a week after having jaw surgery. I ve was on blood thinners for a little over a year afterwards. How can a female tell the difference between bad indigestion and a heart attack?
