Suggest Treatment For Foul Smell After Hysterectomy

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Oct 2014
Question: I had a full hysterectomy 1 year ago, had complications with bowel attaching to bladder with scar tissue. Three months later had surgery again to repair it and cut away scar tissue. Never had issues in my life with fishy odor smell from my vagina (I'm 41) until now a year after my hysterectomy. I have no other symptoms as I can tell that are different. I wear a estrogen patch (1 mg) that I change once a week but have been doing that since right after my surgery. Not sure what to do or how to clear this smell up.

Brief Answer:
It can be due to infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query

Fishy odor in vagina occurs after hysterectomy in some patient, because after hysterectomy normal vaginal flora usually get upset due to change in pH and vaginal discharge.

Fishy odor of vagina can be due to vaginal infection caused by bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis infection.

It takes place due to disturbances in the normal bacterial flora in the vagina caused by excessive vaginal washing, infection, STD, use of hormone supplement and irritation cause by deodorant and perfumes.

Are you experiencing any other symptoms like itching and irritation?

If it is present that indicate you are having vaginal infection.

In that case you should consult a gynecologist and get your examination and investigation performed to rule out the cause of fishy odor and took antibiotic treatment accordingly.

Meanwhile please follow my advice, it can be helpful to you.

- Wear loose fitting cotton undergarment.
- Never do douching and excessive washing of a vagina.
-Avoid perfumes, deodorants and soap.
Eat a balanced and healthy diet
-Use yogurt and garlic in your diet

Hope I have answered your query If you have further questions I will be happy to assist you.

Good luck.
Regards
Dr.Richa
