Suggest Treatment For Extremely Heavy And Painful Cycles

Posted on Fri, 10 Apr 2015
Question: My daughters doctor still believes she suffers from RDS and only agreed to set her up with referrals to neurologist, PT group and a arthritic specialist. my daughter loves her Dr. and I had to push this doctor to do this much.....she insists she does not need an endocrinologist. I am lost at what else I can say to get her dr to agree. To get her to this point I had to say that either the diagnosis or the treatment was wrong because she barely eats but no weight loss either .always eating ice by the glasses, hair loss, extreme pain , sensitive to be touched by clothes or people, always tried( sleeps most of the time.......

Brief Answer:
Thyroid

Detailed Answer:
I am sorry to learn about your daughter's symptoms.

It is quite likely that your daughter's doctor has checked her thyroid status.

If it was abnormal she would have been treated for this.

However there is a caveat here. Given the fact that she is on pain killers it is possible that the blood tests for thyroid such as TSH and free T4 may look falsely low.
I have reviewed her medication list in the previous doctors' interaction.

Nonetheless, it is worthwhile checking her thyroid profile, unless it has already been checked along with general labs like
CBC
CMP

I also like to check blood levels of 25 hydroxy vitamin D as it can result in a variety of symptoms that mimic those of other medical conditions.

Does she have regular menstrual cycles?

Brief Answer:
Follow up

Detailed Answer:
I see.

Well, if her thyroid is normal, the painful and heavy cycles cannot be attributed to that.

A gynecologist will be able to evaluate her for the menstrual problem
