Suggest Treatment For Excessive Cough When On Spiriva

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Mar 2015
Question: what this might be?

X-rays, breathing treatments, now on spiriva and symbacort for about a week, as of yesterday rx cough syrup and now on antibiotics.
been coughing for over month, violent, non-productive and feels like something stuccoed on right side of my throat. X-rays yesterday said no pneumonia but more density from previous X-ray last year so will be getting ct scan soon. Sometimes, I get chocked up when I eat though I'm careful to make small bites. Sometimes just sipping water seems a challenge.

Brief Answer:
You have allergies and having asthma.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

From your description , it is clear that you have allergies and having asthma. In your case asthma is coming more in the form of cough. This condition is known as `Cough variant Asthma`. That something stuck in the throat feeling is because of thick, viscus phlegm which you are unable to cough out and also some amount of spasm of airways.

You should continue using Spiriva and symbicort as it will help in controlling allergy and inflammation thus relieving your symptoms. If symptom still persist, you may need a course of oral steroids but take them only under supervision of your PCP. You should also avoid dust, smoke and dry and cold air or anything else that you know you are allergic.

If there is any abnormality in your chest x ray(increased density as mentioned by you), you should get CT chest done to rule out any other cause of your symptoms.

Take care.
