Suggest Treatment For Diabetic Neuropathy And Fibromyalgia
Question: I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia since 1994 by a Rheumatologist. HE was surprised that NO ONE had diagnosed. Me before as I was a textbook case. I had been diagnosed in 1990 with Idiopathic PN. IN 2000 I was iagnosed with Type ll diabetes. NOt on RX for it for a few more years. They tend to label me Diabetic Neuropathy. All of the EMGs I have had show the operators of the test and results indicate my reactions are

I understand your concern. First of all, since all EMGs that you had done excluded Diabetic PN, I am inclined to believe that your symptoms are due to the Fibromyalgia.
It is a known fact that Fibromyalgia and Diabetic PN, while stemming from different causes, share common symptoms. They both affect the central nervous system, both cause extreme pain and both are chronic conditions.
Diabetic PN is caused by metabolic nerve damage, while in fibromyalgia, pain is due to exagerated perception of stimuli. Studies have shown nerve damage only in a few cases of fibromyalgia. This may be the reason why the EMGs you had done excluded nerve damage.
Since the causes of Fibromyalgia are still uncertain, the treatment is mainly symptomatic, including pain management with medication, antidepressants, topical medication, acupuncture, electrical nerve stimulation, herbal medication.

The EMGS shown much nerve damage but the reactions and reflexes are not consistent with diabetic PN but Idiopathoc PN! MIne is extremely severe so much so hat I have been on oxycodone for years and am in Pain Management. Once I had a ME tell me he thought it was FMS. Thank you

I missunderstood apparently that EMGs ruled out nerve damage altogether.
However, as I mentioned in the previous answer, nerve damage is present in some cases of Fibromyalgia, especially in cases where the condition has been present for a long time.
So in my opinion, the PN identified from the EMGs are due to Fibromyalgia, rather than idiopathic.
