Question: I have had a blood fasting glucose level of 115 - 125 for 10 years. I have also had an A!c of between 6.2 and 6.7 for that same timeframe. Never higher, never lower. I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic for these reasons. I have never taken medicine in any form for my pre-diabetes though I am on Losartan (50mg) for hypertension, Crestor (5mg) for cholesterol and Paxil (15mg) for general anxiety disorder. My BP and cholesterol have been fine with the medicine as is my GAD. My question is simply, am i better off not on meds for my pre-diabetes with the numbers I articulated or am i better off taking Metformin (or similar meds) to get my A1c under 6?

Brief Answer:
MODY2 vs Prediabetes

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern.
It is unusual for the fasting glucose levels to not to pogress over a period of 10 years. Even your HbA1c never progressed. I wonder if you ever did a post meal glucose tests.

The non progression of your blood glucose makes me suspicious that you have something called MODY-2 ( Maturity onset diabetes of Young -2) . This is a gentle variety and does not progress. Very different from the common variety Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

The specialty of MODY2 is that only the fasting glucose is just above normal and at other times, it remains normal. You may do a test called Oral glucose tolerence test ( OGTT) to differentiate MODY-2 from Type 2 Diabetes.

If it is MODY-2, you will not need any medicines. But if it is not, you may require metformin
